Love at first sight: Boys Ranch case manager living her ‘dream job’

When Kandy Steigman learned she would be interning at the Arkansas Baptist Boys Ranch during her summer break from John Brown University, she “dreaded it.”

“I grew up in Harrison, but I didn’t know much about the Ranch. I ... had a job and really needed to work that summer,” she said.

But soon after arriving that summer, Steigman who is now a case manager at the Ranch said she “fell in love” with the boys and the Ranch. So much so, she would end up getting married at the Ranch Chapel following her college graduation in 2002. She dreamed of one day serving on the Ranch staff.

Steigman went on to work at the Arkansas Department of Human Services and later as a teacher’s aide and preschool teacher.

In early 2006, Bill VonderMehden, Ranch director, contacted Steig-man about an job opening. She jumped at the opportunity.

As a case manager, Steigman is likely the staff member many potential residents meet. She determines if the Ranch can offer the care and help that is needed. If not, she helps families and other referral sources in finding other programs that would best aid the boys in need.

Steigman also gives guidance to houseparents and helps residents facing discipline problems or issues.

VonderMehden said, “Kandy is very good at looking ahead and seeing problems and already having them figured out. She is great at interacting with kids and houseparents.”

Steigman’s favorite part of her work, she said, is “hanging out with the boys.” She has been known to tease and play practical jokes on many of the boys.

Calling Steigman “a tomboy” at heart, fellow case manager Rachael Mendez said, “I’ll never forget the day  Kandy found a group of boys looking at a snake in the yard. She walked over, picked it up and started chasing one of the boys with it.  He was running from her and screaming. Priceless!”

Reflecting on her work, Steigman said, “This is my dream job. I still feel the same as I did in the  beginning. I love it! We are like a family.”
